Personal and Historic Connections: Air to Air Photography of Paul Chaplo, Dallas, TX

The history of air to air photography goes back to WWI era when photography was used for reconnaissance. In the photograph above (courtesy of the US Army) an aerial photography is seen with special version of a Graflex camera, fitted with a rigid bellows so that the propeller wash and wind will not adversely affect the camera. Today, photographers use stabilized lenses as in the Smugmug video:

Paul Chaplo, the author and photographer of Marfa Flights: Aerial Views of Big Bend Country is now offering air-to-air photography. This new service captures aircraft in-flight by photographing from another aircraft flying in a close formation. "My love for aviation and the beauty of aircraft in flight makes this aspect of my business most rewarding" says Chaplo.

Paul has flying in his blood and was raised in a USAF family and is the son of a highly-decorated USAF combat and test pilot. Paul earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from Rochester Institute of Technology. His book Marfa Flights: Aerial Views of Big Bend Country was published by Texas A&M University Press in 2014. Currently, Chaplo is working on his second book Amarillo Flights (working title) that will also b published by TAMU Press, College Station, TX.
